October 2008 Airride installation

These Buick’s of the forties are pretty easy to bag cause of two things. The first is because of the design with the “lever action” shocks built in to the upper control arm. No need to move the shocks outside the air spring area like other cars and the second thing is the benefit of coil spring in all four corners. The Buick engineers know their shit back then…

I have to cut a little in the front spring pocket for my Airlift Dominator 7” bags.

These bags are 177 mm or 7” if you like, at max expand so I make sure to have a little extra space for them.

The front upper bag bracket. I made a steel plate and use the three bolts that holds the upper control arm. You can use this way of mounting front bags on all 1940 to 1953 Buick’s in opposite to the normal way on other cars with shocks inside the coil spring.

Here you can see the two bolts to the right who holds the combined control arm/shocks and the centre bolt for the stock coil spring mount to control arm. I made a ¼” plate and drill bypass hole for the three bolts.

Then I welded two half circles to the plate in the right height witch in my case is 40 mm. I use these half circles to be able to have access to the bolts from inside the front cross member. There are big factory holes in the cross member so you can easily wrench the bolts from inside this area.   

The bag, fittings and the air hose can be mounted outside the car before install it up to the spring pocket. As you see I use 90 degree fitting here.

The bag in place. Make sure that one of the openings between the half circles pointed towards the front cross member of the car to be able to use the big hole in the cross member to get access to the centre bolt.

The rear.

This is how it looks when the coil spring is gone. A round steel plate with a ½” hole in centre.

I use another ¼” steel plate with a 12mm hole in centre and bolt it with a M12 bolt through the stock ½” hole. This extra plate is for bringing the rear bag up a little to avoid rubbing the brackets on the axle. Make sure you grind every sharp edge both on the bag plate and to the stock axle brackets to get a smooth round edge.     

Now I welded the plate to the stock spring plate and remove the 12mm bolt.

I bolted the bag through the centre hole and that’s it.

Here’s the upper cup welded and done and the height of the cup is 40 mm.

The frame is hitting the floor even with the 6.50-16 tires.
